LYRE 14th Army Band monument moved from Ft McClellan to Ft Lee VA Museum |
The 14th Women's Army Corps band, was a group of hand picked muscians, a very elite select group of musicians. They were not
just another post band somebody was assigned too. . The WAC Band had very high standards, always maintaining their uniforms
and looking good. They represented not only the band but the US Army too, and also all the women in the army as well as the
army in general.
These ladies worked very hard, often giving up meals to be at another function. They didn't just play their instrument
and be done for the day. There was practice, other functions to attend. They had to act appropriately at all times, on and
off duty, they represented themselves, the band and the army. They were aware that for many people, they were the first and
only women that had ever been seen in uniform.
When people saw the band off on Monday, the impression was, they had it made being in the band. Not knowing that these
ladies worked hard all weekend, being in street parades, enduring the weather to march, uniforms frozen to their body,
mouth full of bugs on the parade field, stepping in mud, playing a concert or entertaining at the NCO or Officers club.
They had to work hard because they were the WOMENS ARMY CORPS BAND.
No matter what time the band finished, they functioned as a unit and were back at work the next morning at 0730. The
band was the pride of the corps and Wac center and school basic training. I was honored to march my Wac troops to the beat
of their drum and music, they never failed to leave a lasting impression.
NOTE: Information about the band came from notes on the concert CD's and asking questions. Thank you Karen Syverson for
being so helpful.
The Wac band came into existence during World War ll. At one time there were five Wac bands. At the end of the war, all of
the bands were deactivated. The 401st army services band was reactivated as the 14th Army band, with five enlisted women and
one Warrant officer. One of those five enlisted women is with the band tonight, trumpet player Katherine Mosey Mcallister.
Following in her mothers footsteps is her daughter Kathy Mcallister Blount.
In 1954 the army moved the home of the Womens army corps from Fort Lee VA, to Fort McClellan Al and the 14th Wac band
also moved. Several of the ladies who made that move are also here tonight.
Several members are still serving proudly. CW5 Jeanne Pace. currently on active duty, assigned to the Adjutant general
school soldier support Institute Fort Jackson SC. She is the last Wac band member serving on active duty and the most senior
Warrant Officer band master in the army on active duty.
Several band members are serving in the National guard or Army reserves. ISG Cheryl Wason, MSG Tina Schafrik, SFC Helen
Gillspie, SFC Maureen Hayes, SFC Genni Arledge, SSG Starrann Wise and SSG Lisa Sterns. Retired SFC Sandra Hill was not in
the Wac band, but assigned to the 14th Army band after the band integrated and she is joining her muscial roots with the Wac
tonight.

LTC Joyce Eslick, Wac band commander, remembers when she was first informed she would be assigned to the Wac band. She thought
it would be great, but the only thing she could play was the radio, she was not a musician. Her COL said, what they needed
was a company commander, not a musican and she fully enjoyed her two years with the Wac band company.
LTC Eslick recalls a time they were at a game. When everybody got to their seats were all seated, there was another
band on the field, it was a high school band and you could barely hear them. When they left the field, this big beautiful
music sounded, and the people all turned to each other and said Wow, what was that, they are good.
By that time the band had marched on to the field and with a big smile, LTC Eslick announced that this was the Womens
Army Corps Band.
She attended University of TN . and received her B.A. at the University of Washington. Joyce joined the WAC as an enlisted
person and after attending OCS increased in rank until her retirement as Lt. Col. Among her many accomplishments, the first
female Liaison officer to the S. Vietnam Women's Army. She served her country in both the far East and in Europe during War
and Peace. she recieved the Bronze Star medal in 1972 and the Joint Services Accomentdation medal for achievement also in
1972.
Sadly as of 31 Dec 2010, LTC Eslick passed away at age 81, she will be missed by all who knew her.
