Five training centers were opened . The first at Fort Des Moines,
Iowa, the second at Daytona Beach, Florida, the third at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, the fourth at Fort Devens, Massachusetts,
and the fifth at Camp Ruston, Louisiana.

Joan Myers
joined the Women's Army Corps in 1950, She took her basic training at Ft Lee Va and After basic training she auditioned
for the 14nd Army WAC Band, at that time the only all-woman band in the services.

Native of Coney Island NY, joined the army in 1952, stationed at Ft Lee VA. She is a french horn
player by trade, mastered the drums, keyboard and a musical saw. Still entertains the troops in the Washington
DC area

The WAC Band presented a special assembly at Jacksonville State sponsored by
the student gov't on 5 July 1955. LT Alice V Peters, conductor- SGT Marjorie Kimmell Assistant
conductor- SGT Rosella Halverson Collins trombone section leader and SGT Ella Wiliams, Clarinet section leader.

WAC BAND PRACTICE FOR ROSE BOWL PARADE
The rose bowl is seven miles of playing and marching, as the band moves closer to the rose
bowl parade New years day 1969, they also practice and march seven miles daily . CPT Ruth E Glaspey, Commander and
the 51 women, said the seven mile march maneuver on the first day of 1969 will be more than a routine parade
or practice march at Ft McClellan..
The band was invited to perform in the 1969 Rose bowl parade. They will also be on a
two week tour, performing at Disneyland. Las Vegas and San Diego. The band practiced everyday, taking hikes with their instruments,
picking remote areas and odd hours so they did not conflick with traffic.

WOJG KATHERINE V ALLEN
Band master Camp Lee. A graduate of Juillard school of music, was welcomed 5 March 1949 along with
10 band members by the Wac Training Center commander, several months later 16 more members joined the unit. WO Allen
later formed small groups, A dance band, dixieland jazz band, barber shop quartet. She complete her tour in 1952 and
was replaced by then 2nd LT Alice V Peters, who maintained that position until 1961.

SFC Rosella May Collins
She enlisted in the army 27 Nov 1950 and played trombone in the women's army corps band. She served
for 20 years. She became a section leader for the trombones, concert bands, dance bands and the dixieland band. She graduated
from the Navy's school of music, where she graduated first in her class of 500 student. The course was 23 weeks.
She later became a drum major for the WAC band. Her list of past performances included the Cuban
missle crisi, rose bowl bowl parade in 1969, three presidential innaugual parades.

ROMONA J MELTZ
A 9 year band member selected by the Center Training commander, A accomplished musician, director
and instructor "a natural leader" held the position for 10 years. She was selcted a SGM in 1973, but decided to
retire. She earned the Legion of Merit for her performace Jan 1962-1973

she was the Chief of the PT Committee for the WAC Center from Dec
1971 to Jul 1973. She saw every woman, enlisted and officer who came to Fort McClellan for Basic Training or OBC
during that time frame. they conducted all the physical training and health related classes. she stayed
in the Army Reserves and retired with 30 years of service.
