WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS OUR NAME
Theme song from Cheers
Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.

The 14th
Women’s Army Corps Band Reunion
25 October 2014
Ft McClellan Alabama
SFC Karen Syverson US Army Ret
Your MC & Narrator for the concert
|
SFC KAREN SYVERSON (photo beth hammer) |
Sister WAC’s and fellow soldiers and Veterans, Welcome to the 6th bi annual concert
of the WAC band. We are so happy to be here at Ft McClellan Al with the audience that helped make us a symbol of the Corps.
In 1982 the TV series CHEERS premiered with a theme song that everybody has heard. THERE A FEW
THINGS BETTER, THAN TO GO WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME. The WAC band has come
home to where EVERYBODY KNOWS OUR NAME.
There are many success stories in the band, to include a
SGM who was a Sr enlisted female in the regular army when she retired. The first female 1SG of a band other than the WAC band.
We have two retired LTC’s, A retired JAG officer, Every band need at least one. Three ladies still serving as 1SG’s
in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve Bands and many more.
One of our more visible success
stories is CW5 Jeanne Pace. She served in the 14th Wac band as
a clarinet player, Company clerk , librarian, and drum major. Then went on to become a Warrant Officer commanding her own
band, to include the Old Guard fife and drum. After 42 years of service, she is thought by others to be the longest serving
female on active duty. Although there seems to be no way to verify that. She is currently serving as Commander of the 1st
Cal Div, Ft Hood Texas and due to join the retired roll 1 Oct 2015. If in fact
she is the last WAC standing, her retirement closes the final chapter in the long history of the Women’s Army Corps
and regular army.

WAC MEDLEY
CW5 Pace returned to her
roots to contuct what the band calls OUR WAC MEDLEY. Starting with DUTY, Also known as COL BOGY MARCH, WAC is a soldier
too and the Pallas Anthena march. In between the marches, listen to the signature drum cadence of the
WAC band and remember all the WAC’s marching on their
way to a date with destiny.

INSTANT CONCERT
Can you picture the fun 50 women have trying to decide what to play for a concert. Chief Pace found the perfect answer to that question. INSTANT CONCERT was written almost 25 years before the album HOOKED ON CLASSICS, introduced classical
music to the main stream world. Instant concert presents 30 well known melodies in a space of about 3 minutes and 10 seconds,
including symphonic themes, opera themes, folk songs, marches. This novelty is so bad that it’s good.

THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE
Consisting of 31 words, which
affirm the values of freedom the American flag represents. The pledge of Allegiance
was written for the 400th anniversary in 1892, the discovery of America. The author decided to write a pledge of
America rather than salute because it was a stronger
expression of loyalty, something of significance even 27 years after the Civil war ended.
One Nation indivisible, refers to the outcome of the war,”
And Liberty and Justice for all” expressed ideals of the Declaration of Independence. The words MY FLAG were replaced
by the FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” in 1923 because some foreign born people might have in mine a flag of the
country of their birth.
In 1979 Maurine Hayes joined the army and Wac band as a trumpet
player. She retired from the 29th Army band, Virginia national guard in 2004 shortley after our first Wac band reunion.
She retired because according to her “ My first concert in an army band was with the WAC Band and it’s fitting
that my final concert in the military be with the WAC band.
After some trepidation about
giving a trumpet player the lead line in a microphone, we asked Rene to help sing in our number THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE with
Bob Delano and Mary Cample Boggs.
Marye Campbell Boggs joined the Wac Band in 1973 as a flute player. Through
the years she acquired a Masters degree in Music performance and a law degree, retiring as a JAG officer from the military.
We still love her, even though today she works for the IRS.
Robert Delano, our baby brother’s first assignment
in the army was with the WAC band, he was assigned while we still carried the
WAC Band designation. So he is truly one of us. All his big sisters in the band love him, although what he represented…..not
so much.
Note: Bob was assigned during a time the Women's Army Corps was being disbanded and intergrated into the reg
army. The WAC band, an all female band now was not only being reassigned to male bands, but males were joining the
WAC band and the 14TH WAC BAND, now is known as the 14TH ARMY BAND. THE END OF AN ERA
