She auditioned for the band when she was in basic training at Ft Lee VA. The happiest day of her life was being assigned

The Band unit has higher standards, because your are more visable. The band people are going to look good in their class
A uniforms because of those standards.
She remembers playing a tour with the band in Kentucky, during the time the race riots were going on. As the band marched
down the street, they were told that parade goers were throwing things at the parade people.
The drum major puts both hands up in the air, while holding the baton in one hand and holding up two fingers on the other
hand. To the band this meant it was march #2, to the people watching, it meant the PEACE SYMBOL the band passed by without
getting anything thrown at them and the people cheered.

Julia joined the Army and the Wac band in 1958. She said her mother was always of the opinion that what ever they wanted,
she was all for it. Her father on the other hand was dead set against her joining the army.
Her father waited until the night before she was to enlist to sign the papers, because he knew she would hate him for
the rest of her life if he didn't. Julia thought about going into industrial chemisty and didn't know why she joined the army.
It was different and she would not be under her parents supervision, she just wanted to be on her own.
That was the dream of anybody getting out of High school, to be on their own and what better way to do that, than in the
army.

She joined the Army on 28 October 1971. Prior to enlistment, the attempt was made to cut through the red tape to enable
her to enlist as an 02G (Flute Player) for the 5th Army Band at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. Since it was still too soon for integration,
she ended up under contract for enlistment with the 14th Army WAC Band at Ft. McClellan, Alabama. She went through basic
with Charlie Company at Ft. McClellan, Alabama. And graduated at the later end of January of 1972 where she joined the
14th Army WAC Band.
While at the WAC Band, she was a flautist with the secondary job of supply clerk. When the WAC Band was broken up, she
was able to choose her original choice for enlistment with the 5th Army Band and joined that unit in June of 1974. During
her time at 5th Army, she served as a 02G and picked up her SMOS as a 02N (Piano Player). In addition to her PMOS,she
also served in the positions of NCOIC of WACs, Librarian, Supply Clerk, and finally as Operations NCOIC.
In June of 1977 she was again transferred to her new unit, 25th Infantry Division Band, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
While in Hawaii, she was the senior female in division which added many additional duties in relation to women in division;
such as, serving on promotion boards, teaching classes on womens role in the military, and counseling for certain problems
that arose in relation to issues surrounding women. She also attended the Junior Leadership School and took several correspondence
courses on basic military knowledge.
Within the band her primary role outside of her instrument was as Administrative NCOIC, Squad Leader, and Section Leader.
She also began her work with women who have been abused as well as working in drug and alcohol. her next and final transfer
came in June of 1980, when she was transferred to the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) Band, Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. She
stayed there until her retirement on 1 January 1992.
While at the 101st, she earned her AMOS as 71L (Administrative Specialist) as well as attended ANCOC for this MOS as
there was no established ANCOC for the 02 series at that time. She also attended schooling for Equal Opportunity and acquired
that skill identifier as well as practiced what she was taught within the division. She also completed correspondence courses
for Army Bandsmen, Military Police, and Basic Infantryman. She was instrumental in ensuring the successful separation of
the company when division bands became separate units. She served as the Administrative NCOIC which evolved into the PAC
NCOIC upon separation.
She also completed the BTMS and SIDPERS Courses enhancing her abilities as an administrator and leader. She served
also as Squad and Platoon Leader as well as Section and Group Leader. Musically she has always participated and continued
to participate as a playing member of Woodwind Quintets, Stage Band, Chorus, and Rock Band. While stationed with the 101st
she was deployed to the 1st Persian Gulf War, where she suffered injuries as well as contracting Gulf War Syndrome.
Upon her return from the Gulf, she worked as the NCOIC of Lee Village Self Help Store until her retirement. Some of
the awards she earned during her time in service were the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf
Cluster, Army Achievement Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Good Conduct Award 6th Award, Southwest Asia Service Medal
with Bronze Star, and National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star.
Upon retirement, she received a 30% disability rating, which since then her condition has worsened and been upgraded
to 60%. Because of her medical problems and her years of service to the military, her spouse at the time asked her not
to work, so she could enjoy life for awhile. She got tried of that and got bored and worked for Sioux Automation in Sioux
Center, Iowa as jack of all trades for about a year, then her health started to deteriorate so she choose to quit working
at that time. However, she did spend a lot of time volunteering at the local schools.
Some of the areas that she worked in were office administration, teaching ESL, teaching drama to 8th grade students,
and helping children in the 2nd and 3rd grade who had reading problems. In 1999 she started working for MilitaryWoman.org.
In her capacity with the site, she assisted students and reporters with research about women’s issues in the
military, wrote several articles which were published in the Chicago Tribune and the Christian Science Monitor, just to mention
a couple, on topics such as single parenthood in the military and sexual harassment and several other topics that concern
women, andshe was also afforded the opportunity to participate in round table discussion on matters surrounding women in
the military on the Oxygen Network.
She was also the Assistant Webmaster and Forum moderator. She stopped working for the organization in 2010, when they
changed their format and she didnt care for the direction they were heading.
While in the service, she did attended Gadsden State Junior College in Gadsden, Alabama working towards a degree in performance.
Because of the time constraints of service, she chose not to continue her formal education. In 2007 she returned to college
and attended Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon, Iowa. she received her Secretarial Diploma as well as her Associates
of Arts and Associates of Applied Science in Administrative Office Management.
While attending school she was a member of both STARS and TRIO programs where she held several different leadership
positions. She had short stories and poems published in the colleges anthology, The Spine. She made the honors list every
semester she attended and graduated with a 3.96 GPA. She was invited and became president of Sigma Kappa Delta (English
Honor Society) and Phi Theta Kappa (Honors Society). She was also a member of GLO Board and was used extensively as a paid
tutor for Tutor for Microsoft® Word 2003, Microsoft® Excel 2003, Intro to Computers I and II, Fundamentals of Web Programming,
Composition I and II, and Accounting I.
The highlight of her time at NCC was serving as an Intern for Orange City Home Health and Hospice. A job she would
have gotten had she not had to return for her last semester of school. Since her graduation in 2009, she has looked for
work, but this is the time the bottom fell out of the economy in her area and since there are young people with families
out there needing jobs, she tends to get passed over.
She has been married three times, but the last was the most devastating since he walked out because of her health issues.
No problem, just picked herself up and started all over again, but dont we all at one point or another. She have one child,
a son, whose name is Daryl L. Dailey, Jr., butshe call him DJ. He is 32 and has provided her with the most wonderful grandchild,
Brooklynn Leigh Dailey, in the world.
